The food standards agency give all restaurants a hygiene rating of 0 -5 and a quick browse of eateries in Hastings & Tonbridge reveals a catalogue of institutions posing a potential health risk to diners.
Ratings are judged on how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored and the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council cabinet member for environment services Brian Luker said: “When planning your special meal out, make sure you check the hygiene ratings online and choose a restaurant that takes food hygiene seriously.
"This is also an important time for local food businesses as a good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of. It matters to customers so we are encouraging all businesses in Tonbridge and Malling to display their rating.”
